Waterton Glacier International Peace Park

I've been here!

In 1932 Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta, Canada) was combined with the Glacier National Park (Montana, United States) to form the world’s first International Peace Park. Situated on the border between the two countries and offering outstanding scenery, the park is exceptionally rich in plant and mammal species as well as prairie, forest, and alpine and glacial features.

Trivia

  • In 1932, the United States and Canada joined together to create the world’s first International Peace Park.
  • There has been an Aboriginal presence in the region going back 12,000 years. Places in the parks hold deep significance for First Nations people.
  • At the time of inscription, the Peace Park commemorated the peace and goodwill the two (Canada snd USA) nations share. Today, Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park use peace and goodwill to work towards shared management: protecting the water, plants and animals that are found in the WGIPP.

Year of Inscription: 1995
