Fatehpur Sikri

I've been here!

Built during the second half of the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was the capital of the Mughal Empire for only some 10 years. The complex of monuments and temples, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid.

Trivia from Fatehpur Sikri

It is at Fatehpur Sikri that the legends of Akbar and his famed courtiers, the nine jewels or Navaratnas, were born. It was built in red sandstone to celebrate the birth of his son Salim and also to honor the Saint Sheikh Salim Chisti. The Imperial complex was abandoned in 1585, shortly after its completion, due to paucity of water and its proximity with the Rajputanaareas in the North-West, which were increasingly in turmoil/
