One thing not miss here
must visit Badami and Aiole while visiting pattadakal
Stayed at
Mine was a day trip so did not book any hotel.
Ate at
There are not many hotels around Pattadakal, best to have food in Badimi city itself. there are few OK hotels near Badami bus stand (5km from Badami railway station)

My weekend trip to Pattadakal, Aihole & Badami on 19-Jan-2014 Started from Secunderabad on Saturday by Hubli express and reached Badami at 04:30, Caught first available bus to Pattadakal at 07:15. Only couple of localites were there at that time so I had most of the place all to my self for about an hour; being in this kind of place at first light with only audible sounds being of birds and gentle breeze, it felt absolutely majestic and serene. With no distractions and a bit of imagination I for a moment felt transported back in to the time of its full regalia; With a little sound and CG effects of marching guards and courtyard girls (all inside my head ofcourse 😉 ) this place came complete ALIVE!!! An hour has gone by at this hypnotic state and then the reality struck me back with a cacophony of touring school kids 🙁 So I got my camera out and shot few hundred pics of every rock and sculpture in and around the place and finally moved on to Aihole by 11:30. Aihole (Like me, If you are also visiting this place for the first time then do know that its locally pronounced as ‘aivollde’ and NOT ‘i-hole’ and save your self from some awkward moments right there :p) Any how the monuments at this place are spread across much wider area then compared to Pattadakal and the architecture too is fairly different in a sense that monuments were much curvy, some blunt and some lacked the finesse that previous site has but being almost a century older than the ones at Pattadakal, they are very unique in their own right so if you are visiting Pattadakal then do make sure to visit this amazing place too. This location deserves atleast a good 4-5 hours for touring but unfortunately I could only spare 3 due to my tight schedule so moved on to Badami by 15:15. Badami Is the real odd one out of the three sites and it must have been a tough call for UNESCO to choose Pattadakal over Badami because its one thing to make several pieces of clean cut rocks and stack them up later but to carve out a mountain!! that too with the kind of intricate patterns and flawless sculptures is entirely a different story. As a frequent PC user I know what CTRL+Z means to me and I couldn’t help but wonder what their CTRL+Z was, I mean what would they do if they goof up and chip out an finger or something?! any how the craftsmanship exhibited at these sites is unreal and amazing for its time. And so it took me over 3 hours to tour across both the monuments spread atop the two adjacent hills of Badami and finally ended the tour at sunset 80:45 and returned back home by Monday. To truly justify a trip like this, one should spend whole of the weekend if not a whole week to visit these three places but if you are busy with work during week days then try to either plan it over a long weekend or get prepared for some seriously congested schedule but either way do plan to visit this must see place
