If you like water gardens you’ll love this!
Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey is a beautiful World Heritage Site near Ripon in Yorkshire. Close enough to combine with a trip to Saltaire (about an hour away in the car). On the surface of it, it can feel like two separate things – the ruined Cistercian Abbey and the stunning 18th century water gardens. But really the ruins are fully part of the gardens – they were carefully integrated into the design of the garden – invisible from most places, but coming suddenly, and perfectly framed, into view at the turn of a path. Its a garden design that is only really understood through walking its path and looking out over its vistas. Stunning!
