I visited New Lanark for a conference last week, which was a great opportunity to see this incredible place (and get a guided tour!). It’s a deep river valley on the Clyde where the fast water was harnessed to drive the cotton spinning mills. It’s technologically significant but also socially significant – it became a place where the philanthropic industrialist Robert Owen experimented with a sort of utopian ideal of a working community. They still mill their own wool (and make their own ice-cream!)
