Grand-Bassam is a historic town and the first capital of Côte d’Ivoire (1893-1900). Located 43 kilometers east of Abidjan, the town of Grand-Bassam is the chief town of Grand-Bassam department in the South Comoé region.
On July 3, 2012, the district of France Grand-Bassam, considered the historical heart of the city, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city is located on the shoreline and includes frontage on the Atlantic Ocean and one on the lagoon Ébrié.

This city was the first city to be visited by European explorers. Charles Marie Philippe Kerhallet was the first European to reach what was then a village. Fort Nemours, the first strong durable Coast with that of Assini, was built in 1843, after the landing of Lieutenant Fleuriot Langle, who was to lead to a treaty between France and the King of Krinjabo, Amon Ndoufou . At that time, the skirmishes with the British were frequent.

Founded in the mid-nineteenth century by Admiral Mequet, the city served as the man French administrative center from 1893 to 1899. In 1899, the center was transferred to Bingerville, following an outbreak of yellow fever. 45 Europeans died – and epidemics returned in 1900 and 1903.

The city remains an important port until the 1930s, before handing over to Abidjan. Erected in common by a joint order of 31 December 1914, Grand-Bassam was the first town in Ivory Coast. The new administrative unit was born from the split of the former circle of the same name.

As a seaside resort, Grand-Bassam is able to attract more tourists and international meetings for conferences and seminars. It therefore has a number of hotels and restaurants. Grand Bassam is also bursting with tourist attractions that raise awareness about the historical past of this city. We can quote:

  • The Costume Museum
  • The ceramic center
  • Lighthouse
  • The former home of the station

Since independence, the official language throughout the Ivory Coast is French. The lingua franca, spoken and understood by most of the population is Dioula and also the Abouré Nzema (appolo).

In November, the Abissa festival takes place, which consists of rejoicing and reconciliations, where acts of violence are prohibited. This festival can also be the time to introduce a new king in the Ashanti people. All Akan ethnic groups are involved in the ABISSA (Nzima, Agni, Baoule, Allandian, Adjoukrou, Ébrié, Aboure, Fanti, Avikams, Laouien, Abron, etc). Some go with a statuette of a family member or friend. The ritual is to participate in these sacred dances with statuettes. This festival lasts one week and ends with the band. Each year, we are also seeing the generation of celebration during the Easter holidays in the village.

During a tour of discovery, I sensitized people on the preservation and conservation of this heritage and other sites related to World Heritage. I allso had an interview with Mr. Manzan ALFRED, vice president of the house of Grand-Bassam artists and with the head of the National MUSEUM costume which was the governor’s house BINGER.
