Discovering the hidden – Ohrid cave churches
Ohrid region is one of the most famous natural and cultural heritage site on the Balkan. The city known as the Balkan Jerusalem holds a legend that has been home of 365 churches starting from the 4th century, till now. On that list, there are few hidden, cave churches placed on magnificent locations, speaking loud about the memories and the history of the christianity in the city.
Cave churches are dating back in 9th century but the paintings and the date mainly form 13th and 14th century. Although the paintings are placed on the uneven walls of the cave, there are examples of priceless painting that can be seen! Variations of painting styles, clever lightning solutions, steep stairs and magnificent view are the things that characterise this beautiful small structures around Ohrid Lake.
There are 10 found in the Ohrid region. Most of them are on the Ohrid lake coast and sometimes, discovering them is real surprise, since they are not easy to be noticed, and not that commercialized to be famous and easy accessible. Which makes them real treasure, and a ‘must see’ for the real explorers
