ICH Research

Task Description

While we often relate heritage to monuments, it is much more than that. The broad definition of heritage includes everything that has been traditionally handed over from the past generation – customs, art forms, traditions, festivals, cuisines in addition to monuments and sites. These are referred to as intangible cultural heritage (ICH) too. Intangible heritage also referred as living heritage, since it is passed on as knowledge and skills.

In 2003, the general conference of UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The programme currently compiles two lists. The longer Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the shorter List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. In this task, you will be assigned an ICH element each. You have to do research and collect following information about this element:

  • Information about the ICH and pictures (make sure to add credit/links to sources at the bottom of your article)
  • Compile trivia, quiz, and other interesting facts

As in other tasks, you are not limited to writing articles – you can choose to explore different media, channels and styles for presenting information.
