If you can hike and the weather is good then I would recommend hiking to the bottom of hte canyon and staying in the Phantom Ranch. I stayed there for 1 night and hiked back up the next day. It took us 4 hours to go down and 6 hours to hike back up. we used the Bright Angel trail to come back up to the rim since its less steep while coming back up. For going down we used the south Kaibab trail. This trail is much steeper so its a faster descent. Be careful of the mules. They pass real close.
