Performing Arts: Cultural Diversity of Dance
One of my favorite types of performing arts is dance!!! I have been dancing since I was 8 years of age. Dancing gives me a chance to just have fun and express myself though many movements. The dance company that I started out with was Ballethnic Dance Company (pronounced Bal-eth-nik). It was started in 1990 in Atlanta, GA by the founders, Waverly Lucas II and Nena Gilrearth, in which they have taken performing arts of creative movements to a whole different level.
Ballethnic has many different varieties of dances including: ballet, pointe, pre-Pointe, pas de deux, modern, jazz, hip hop, tap, African, and Ballethnicize. The goal is to train, become educated and perform in a unique form.
The first signature performance is called the Urban Nutcracker. Mr. Lucas has taken the Tchaikovsky classic, The Nutcracker, and put his own little twist of urban styles to complete the show. The story is about a little girl named Sara who falls into a deep sleep and dreams of a world full of live toys and one special one called the Nutcracker. He defends her from her nightmare of large sized rats and saves her life. Many characters are used in the play like Mother Spice, Coca-Cola Pas de Six, Black Russians, Brown Sugar and her Chocolatier. The actions of the characters were presented by creative ballet movements that helped tell the story.
One of my favorite performances is called The Leopard Tale. In this particular performance, Mr. Lucas forms a unique mixture of classical ballet and African dance with top energy and action. The dancers tell a story of a leopard who is trying to survive in a wild jungle. The first act is surrounded by wild animals, like gazelles, zebras, vultures, wild dogs and venomous snakes. In the second act, village people take over with live music including drums, tambourines, etc. This livens the audience as the dancers on stage use high energy to dance. The warriors, which is many people’s favorite, save the village from the leopard.
