Ahmedabad Heritage Walk

There are three identified reasons as classified by statistics for visiting a Heritage Site. Tourist – Education – Explorer . I obviously don’t fall into the First category, being local of this city. So it was the combination of later twos : Education (related to my Interior Background) & feeding my wanderlust soul.

The heritage walk is organised by AMC , it started sharp at 8 from Swaminarayan Mandir, Kalupur  & the walkway was interesting , finding paths into intricate “Pols” of Ahmedabad ending at  Jumma Masjid at 10.30 a.m. Based on this the walk is popularly referred to as mandir se masjid tak!

It was sight to behold all those beautifully carved Brackets , admiring the drainage system build in 1400, & still working. And the magnificent Temples & Mosque, which stand Tall still after so many years. It was quite an experience.

Being an interior designer, I was awestruck by the design elements used in those times, the detailed carvings, the structure elements, the materials used which works so well with nature.

The major highlights of the walk were : Chabutras’ or bird feeding towers , directional arrows stating the direction of the underground sewer , 400-years-old underground Jain temple , The Calico Dome, & the splendid Jami Masjid.

Growing up in the city it was hard to believe that just a few kilometres away across the Sabarmati was another façade of this city that boasted of modern buildings, flyovers and shopping malls. It’s easy to ignore Ahmedabad’s glorious past when confronted with its colourful, vibrant present. All you have to do, to get that seemingly elusive peek at what it used to be. It indeed seemed like travelling in another parallel world in different time zone.
